چکیده

The mounting demand for high density non-volatile flash memories consequences new challenges of flash memory reliability issues [1,2]. Common reliability-improving techniques approaches are addressing device and process manufacturing improvements [3] or error correction codes (ECC) techniques [4]. This paper proposes a novel memory architecture and method of increasing reliability through reducing the program-erase (P/E) cycles. Reduction of P/E cycles is achieved through a memory architecture which enables rewrite operation in a single flash memory cell, instead erase-and-program which is currently applied. Furthermore, a potential improvement of the write operation time is also achieved when using sufficiently large write buffer, regarding modern write techniques [5,6].

Building Flexible, Fault-Tolerant Flash-based Storage Systems

Adding flash memory to the storage hierarchy has recently gained a great deal of attention in both industry and academia. Decreasing cost, low power utilization and improved performance has sparked this interest. Flash reliability is a weakness that must be overcome in order for the storage industry to fully adopt flash for persistent storage in mission-critical systems such as high-end storage...

Asymmetric Programming: A Highly Reliable Metadata Allocation Strategy for MLC NAND Flash Memory-Based Sensor Systems

While the NAND flash memory is widely used as the storage medium in modern sensor systems, the aggressive shrinking of process geometry and an increase in the number of bits stored in each memory cell will inevitably degrade the reliability of NAND flash memory. In particular, it's critical to enhance metadata reliability, which occupies only a small portion of the storage space, but maintains ...

Cost-Efficient Memory Architecture Design of NAND Flash Memory Embedded Systems

NAND flash memory has become an indispensable component in embedded systems because of its versatile features such as non-volatility, solid-state reliability, low cos,t and high density. Even though NAND flash memory gains popularity as data storage, it also can be exploited as code memory for XIP (execute-in-place). In this paper, we present a cost-efficient memory architecture which incorpora...

Implementing Rank Modulation

The density of NAND flash grows at the price of significantly reduced reliability. To enable the continued scaling of flash memory more fundamental changes are needed. In this paper, we show that existing flash is much more reliable by adopting the rank modulation (RM) scheme [2]. RM encodes data using the relative orders of memory cell voltages, which is inherently resilient to asymmetric erro...

MLC NAND Flash memory: Aging effect and chip/channel emulation

This work presents an FPGA-based emulator that can be used for emulating NAND Flash memories, either at the chip or at the channel level, along with the effect of aging on their performance. The emulator is based on a reconfigurable hardware-software architecture, which enables accurate representation of various NAND Flash technologies, focusing especially on MLC cases. The presented architectu...
